NULGE grounds Lokoja over LG autonomy
LOKOJA—THE Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Kogi State chapter, yesterday, took to the streets of Lokoja, demanding total autonomy for local government areas.
NULGE, joined by Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, in the state, also demonstrated over the 15 months arrears owned their members. The local government workers marched from first 200 units estate down to Phase One Market at Logongoma, and then proceeded with their protest to the State Assembly to submit their petition.
Addressing the protesters, state chairman of the NLC, Onuh Edoka, said local government area was no longer what it was in the past, stressing that only total autonomy would restore its lost glory. Edoka said now that the National Assembly had done the right thing by passing the Autonomy Bill, state Houses of Assembly should do the same. He said: “We call on Kogi State Speaker, Kolawole Matthew, to rally its 24 other members to pass the bill immediately the NASS second it to state assemblies.
“If they (state Assemblies) don’t pass the bill this time around, we will know that it is our brothers from our constituencies that are our enemies.” Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Kolawole Matthew, while receiving the petition from the protesters, said when the bill was transmitted to them for consideration by the National Assembly, they would do the needful.
