agbemi Nominated For FIFA Women’s Coach Award
Former Super Falcons coach Florence Omagbemi has been nominated for The Best FIFA Women’s Coach 2017 award.
The successful Nigeria coach was included in a 10-man shortlist, compiled by women’s football experts, announced on Fifa’s official website on Thursday.
Omagbemi led the Super Falcons to Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) victory last year in Cameroon, but has not been retained for the job by the Nigeria Football Federation.
Having lifted the AWCON trophy four times during her playing days, her victory in Cameroon made her just the second woman, after Eucharia Uche, to win the competition as both a player and a coach.
She ended up being the sole female nominee for CAF’s 2016 African Coach of the Year award. A success at the world level would mean a lot for the 42-year old.
The 10 nominees for the award as released on the Fifa website are:
* Olivier Echouafni (FRA – French national team)
* Emma Hayes (ENG – Chelsea Ladies)
* Ralf Kellermann (GER – VfL Wolfsburg)
* Xavi Llorens (ESP – FC Barcelona Femeni)
* Nils Nielsen (DEN – Danish national team)
* Florence Omagbemi (NGA – Nigerian national team)
* Gerard Precheur (FRA – Olympique Lyonnais Feminin)
* Dominik Thalhammer (AUT – Austrian national team)
* Sarina Wiegman (NED – Netherlands national team)
* Hwang Yong-Bong (PRK – Korea DPR / Korea DPR U-20 national teams)
It is from this final shortlist that key members of the footballing community – journalists, fans, national team coaches and captains – will vote for the winner, and the final three nominees will be announced in mid-September.
The ceremony where the winners of the awards will be crowned, which will be the second edition of The Best FIFA Football Awards™, will take place in London on Monday, October 23, 2017
